Post-doctoral Researcher: Climate Change and Wildlife



Job Description: The University of Florida, Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center is seeking applicants for a post-doctoral researcher for an interdisciplinary research project on climate change and wildlife. The project focus is to develop tools that can be used by federal and state agencies to incorporate climate change considerations into natural resource management. The study focuses on developing climate envelope models for the 21 threatened and endangered (T&E) terrestrial vertebrates in South Florida and considers the broad extent of their geographic ranges (including Central and South America). The applicant will be one of the project leads developing climate envelope/niche and climate-driven habitat models for these T&E species.

The successful applicant should have formal education and experience in ecology, conservation biology, or related fields. Applicants should have experience with quantitative modeling and analysis and geospatial skills. Experience with climate change models is a plus. Applicants must have good written and verbal communication skills and be able to work in an interdisciplinary research environment. This project is a cooperative venture among the University of Florida, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. National Park Service; therefore, applicant must be able to work well with scientists and resource managers in meetings and workshops. Applicant will be expected to publish in scientific journals, write proposals for future funding, and prepare reports.

Qualifications: PhD required. Excellent writing skills and computer proficiency are essential. Experience with ecological research and knowledge of South Florida/Caribbean ecosystems are helpful but not required. Applicant should have or be pursuing a degree in ecology, biology, environmental studies, or a related field, possess excellent organizational skills, and have the ability to work well with others in a fast-paced environment.

Salary: Salary is $43,000 – $48,000 and depends upon experience. Salary includes a benefits package. Position is to be filled immediately. The project is a 3 year project with appointment on a year-to-year basis with additional years contingent on continued funding and successful performance of duties. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States and have all paperwork completed prior to accepting the position.
